I wanted to give you the wrap up numbers for the season. Most of our martins have fledged, although there are some late nesters, hopefully they will be strong enough to make the long journey to Brazil very soon. The others are on their way.
Here are the counts from Menunkatuck's colonies: Hammonasset East 32 of. 48 units used With 80 chicks
Hammonasset West. 36 of 48 units were used and 107 chicks fledged The Colony at the Guilford Salt Meadow Sanctuary in Guilford Ct..we have been trying to establish a colony there for 8 years a This year we put up a gourd rack ( a different kind of housing) and we had 5 nesting pairs. We are super excited about this, the martins need all the colonies they can start.
We intend on expanding our colonies next year, adding another house at Hammonasset at the swan pond so we will most likely run this sponsorship program again, if you are interested.
Terry and I and all the Menunkatuck Board members thank you for your support of us and the martins. We hope we have won over a few more purple martin supporters, that species needs all the help it can get. Most Sincerely and with great appreciation Lorrie Shaw
